A First-Timer's Moving Checklist for DTLA
Moving to a new city is stressful, but moving to DTLA has its own unique challenges and requirements. Here's the comprehensive checklist you need to make your move as smooth as possible.
BEFORE THE MOVE (2-4 weeks prior)
1. Research Your Building's Move-In Policies Most high-rise buildings in DTLA require elevator reservations. Some charge fees ($200-500) for reserved elevator time. Contact your building's management to understand their move-in procedures, loading dock access, and any restrictions on moving hours (many buildings don't allow moves on weekends).
2. Set Up Utilities Contact LADWP (Los Angeles Department of Water and Power) to set up your water, gas, and electricity. Give them at least 2 weeks notice. If your building uses a property management company, they may handle this, so check first.
3. Forward Your Mail Submit a change of address with USPS. Go to usps.com and fill out Form 3575 online, or visit your local post office.
4. Update Your Address Notify your employer, bank, insurance company, subscriptions, and any services you use. This includes streaming services, gym memberships, and recurring deliveries.
5. Research Parking Permits If you own a car, check if your building provides parking or if you need a street permit. Some DTLA areas require residential parking permits from the City. Applications can take 1-2 weeks to process.
6. Get Health Insurance Sorted If moving from another state, update your health insurance. California has different healthcare networks and insurance requirements.
DAY OF THE MOVE
1. Confirm Elevator Reservation Arrive at your building early and confirm your elevator reservation with building management. Arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled time.
2. Document Your Apartment's Condition Take photos and videos of the apartment before moving furniture in. This is crucial for your security deposit.
3. Meet Your Building Manager Introduce yourself and ask about building amenities, trash day, and any rules you should know about.
4. Check All Utilities Make sure water, gas, electricity, and internet are working. Test all outlets and appliances.
AFTER THE MOVE (First week)
1. Register Your Vehicle If you're moving from out of state, you have 20 days to register your car with the California DMV. You'll need a California ID first, which takes about 1 week to get.
2. Get a California ID Visit your local DMV to get a California driver's license or ID card. Bring your out-of-state ID, proof of residence (utility bill or lease), and proof of Social Security number.
3. Find Your Metro Station Explore your neighborhood and locate the nearest Metro station. Download the Metro app and get familiar with the bus and train routes.
4. Register for Parking Permit (if needed) If you need a residential parking permit, submit your application online at the appropriate council district office.
5. Explore Your Neighborhood Take walks, find your favorite coffee shop, grocery store, and restaurants. Get to know your neighbors.
6. Update Your Address Everywhere Make sure your new address is updated in all your systems: employer, bank, insurance, subscription services, etc.
THE BOTTOM LINE
Moving to DTLA requires more planning than moving to a traditional neighborhood because of high-rise buildings and city-specific requirements. Give yourself at least 2-3 weeks of preparation time, and don't underestimate the importance of confirming your building's move-in procedures. With proper planning, your move can be smooth and stress-free.
